Volunteer Information
Volunteers are the life blood of our organization, serving as providers of vital computer services, as on-air readers, in office support areas or as liaisons to our members and Reading Service users.

Our volunteers represent a wide variety of ages, backgrounds and talents.

Here are some of the types of volunteer opportunities that are available at WHIL.

The majority of WHIL's volunteers work with the Radio Reading Service for the blind. They read newspapers and magazines over the air for people who are unable to read due to blindness or other disability. Most readers give us an hour per week, but scheduling is flexible and subject to the listener's availability. Those wishing to be readers will be asked to audition by reading select newspaper articles and pronouncing a list of words and names.

Our next greatest need for volunteers comes during our fall and spring pledge periods. During each of those seasons, we need lots of people to help answer phones and take pledges phoned in by our members. Volunteer shifts for this project are usually two hours in length, but again, scheduling is flexible.

Occasionally, volunteers are needed to help with large direct mail campaigns and other office projects. These opportunities come around every month or two, and usually involve working in teams to stuff and seal envelopes, make phone calls and perform other large office tasks.

Volunteers who sign up for this kind of opportunity will be called on occasion as the need arises.

If you are looking for a stimulating opportunity to give to your community and to work with good people, all while helping to provide vital services and supporting the work of WHIL and its radio reading service, please call us at 251-380-4699,

And thanks for your interest!
